Could Sci-fi really be for me?

I have asked myself that same question over the past couple of months as I have worked to complete my Sci Fi dare. I have been watching movies and attempting to read books. Yes, I said attempting......

Until now!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have finished my first book of THE DARE!!!!

and guess what?

I liked it....

a lot.

I know....what is the world coming to???? Who me, like a sci fi book?!?

It gets worse....(ringing hands ). There are 12 ( I think) books in the series and I already have my eye on the second book and have read the book jacket. Yeah..... it was that good.

So, you are now asking, "What is this book that has turned the world on end?"

EYE OF THE WORLD by Robert Jordan

Like I have said in past posts, I don't like summarizing books. Not a strong point of mine. I will apologize ahead of time to all the Eye of World fans ahead of time. But here it goes.

In a nut shell it is the story about a world that revolves around the idea of wheels and time.

That is where my brain started going a bit wonky. And that is where my mind stayed for the first hundred pages or so. I think I was fighting my inner historical ficiton lover and then you add the fact that I have some issues with the names in science ficiton and I was wondering how I was going to get past the first 150 pages, let alone the next 500.

And then it happened. The Trollocs came along.

What the heehaw are Trollocs? They are these awesomely stupid, bad ass donkey, wolf like creatures that follow these things called Fades and they kill for fun and run on goat legs. Oh yeah....they kind of caught my attention.

From there on out, the story was all about this group of people from the Three Rivers trying to run away from the Trollocs and Fades and dragon creatures. There is this head chick who is an Aes Sedai (really magical lady) named Moraine and her kick ass protector named Lan and they lead these three teen boys who are being hunted by the bad dudes. Oh, and a magician/storyteller man and two other chicks who are healers, also trek along for the ride and it is 500+ pages of good ol' sword fighting, magical, suspense fun!

And to think...there are more books to come along! YEAH BABY!

So, now you are all going to start sending me comments about the sci-fi books you think I will love......hold on.....I started DUNE.

And I really want to hit myself in the head with a rolling pin.

You've got me LOLing here at work when I'm supposed to be working - shame on you! I am SO GLAD that you enjoyed THE EYE OF THE WORLD!!! Can I tell you how happy that makes me?! I will, however, point out three things.

1 - This is actually Fantasy, not SciFi.

2 - The series will be completed in 2012 and will have 14 books.

3 - DUNE is about as different as you can get from this book (and DUNE is actually SciFi).

Now I just need you to call in to the blog talk radio show on 2/9 and discuss this book with me (and everyone else) - what fun we'll have!

Never in my strangest fever dreams could I imagine you actually typing out the word "Trollocs" in any kind of positive connotation.

Soon you will be waxing philosophical about the merits of Star Wars over Star Trek(Star Wars is always better) and we can go to Comic-Con and play some Dungeons and Dragons!

I'm really glad you liked Eye of The World, but just wait, it gets oh so much better (before it gets oh so terrible).
